Your week

Seven nights in Gascony. Here is how the weekactually goes.

This is a rhythm, not a programme. There is something on most days and nothing on some. You can take any of it or none of it.

Guests along the long dinner table raising their glasses to each other.
A guest laughing with a glass in her hand by a sunny window.
A board of cheeses and grapes on the table.
A hand holding up a glass of white wine at a tasting.
Guests walking a path beside a lake on a summer morning.
A slice of plum tart on a white plate.
The whole group standing on the stone bridge over the natural pool, with the château behind.

In Jo's words

Absolutely nothing is compulsory. One of the most important parts of the week is having time to yourself. You can sit by the pool, read, nap, have a treatment or do absolutely nothing at all. That is not wasted time, it is part of the retreat.

At the château

The half of the weekthat happens at home.

A lot of the week never leaves the château. Somebody else cooks, the spa is under the same roof. There is always a sofa with company on it and a room with nobody in it.

Every meal

One table,all fifteen of you.

Lindsay, our private chef on site, cooks every meal and dinner is at one long table every night.

Nobody eats alone here and nobody has to work at it. Tell Jo before you come what you cannot eat and it is handled, quietly.

See a sample day and meet the chef

Guests laughing together at the dinner table.
Lunch at the table, a slice of savoury tart with salad and a cold drink.

Under the stone

The spaand the pool.

A hammam, an infrared sauna, a traditional stone sauna, a jacuzzi and an indoor heated pool. Most women plan an hour in there and lose the afternoon.

Massages and facials can be booked while you are here and are the one thing that costs extra.

  • Included
  • Treatments extra
A guest resting on the wooden bench of one of the saunas, lit warm.
Guests swimming in the indoor pool under the vaulted stone ceiling.
Two guests laughing in the pool, one with her arms in the air.

Only if you want to

Moving,gently.

There are movement sessions in the week, indoors or in the cloister garden, for anyone who wants one. Nobody is counting, nobody is watching and nobody minds if you are still in bed.

It is not a fitness retreat. You move because it feels good, not because anybody needs you to.

  • Included and optional
Guests on mats in the cloister garden, seen from above.
A guest stretching on a mat on the warm stone of the courtyard.
A guest with her eyes closed and her hands at her temples.

The rest of the time

Companyand none.

Fifteen women, most of whom arrived not knowing anybody. By the middle of the week there is a sofa that is always full and a group chat that carries on without you asking it to.

There is also time on your own, which is the other half of the point. At some point Jo will ask you to write a letter. People talk about it afterwards.

Katrina, USA.
Guests sitting close together on a sofa, listening to each other.
Two guests hugging on a sofa, laughing.
Guests writing at a long table, pens and paper out.

Out in Gascony

France, actually.Not justfrom the terrace.

This is a retreat in Gascony rather than a retreat that happens to be in France. Some of the week is spent out in it.

The market

The marketat Lectoure.

The weekly market, on foot, with baskets. It is a working French market rather than a display for visitors: cheese, bread, olives by the bowl and more tomatoes than anyone needs.

Then coffee under an umbrella while somebody decides whether she really needs that hat.

  • Included
  • Weather dependent
The weekly market in Lectoure, stalls and white awnings down a street of stone houses.
A guest choosing strawberries at a stall, a straw hat under her arm.
Bowls of olives and spices on a market stall, the stallholder behind them.
Guests at a café table under umbrellas on market morning.

Eating out

Lunch out.Dinner out.

Twice in the week the kitchen at the château gets a rest and we eat out: lunch at Jo's favourite brasserie and dinner at Jo's favourite evening restaurant. Lunch is a typical French menu du jour, the set lunch of the day that the locals eat. Nobody has to choose anything. It is simply put in front of you, which after a year of making every decision yourself turns out to be a treat.

  • Included
Guests at lunch in a restaurant with a beamed ceiling and chandeliers.

Wine and Armagnac

Tasted whereit is made.

Gascony is wine country that has never made a fuss about it. The wine tasting is an afternoon out of its own: you taste at a vineyard rather than a counter, with somebody who made what is in the glass.

The Armagnac tasting is a separate outing. Armagnac is Gascony's own spirit and one of the oldest in France: an afternoon at Maison Aurian in Condom, being shown how it is made and then tasting it.

  • Wine tasting, included
  • Armagnac tasting, included
Guests walking a track beside the vines under a big sky.
A guide talking to the group among the vines.
A guest tasting a glass of white wine.
The group on a tour inside the winery.

The villages

Stone, shuttersand a fromagerie.

Condom and the villages around it are old, quiet and built of the same pale stone as everything else here. We also visit the Abbaye de Flaran, an old Cistercian abbey close by. There is usually time to wander, to sit down somewhere and to come back with a cheese you did not plan to buy.

A lane past a stone tower and a tall cypress.
A street of old stone houses and small shops.
Guests walking together down a lane between stone buildings.
Rows of cheeses at a fromagerie counter, each with its chalk label.

On foot

The Caminoand gentler walks.

The route to Santiago de Compostela runs through Gascony. A guided thirteen kilometre stretch of it passes close by and takes about three hours. It is not a hilly walk. There is one slight hill at the start and after that it is about distance, not climbing. If you are comfortable walking for three hours, you will be fine.

On other days the walks are slower, there is a group at the back. Jo usually walks with it. Everything here is optional. Women who sit it out have a very good day at the château.

  • Included
  • Thirteen kilometres, optional
Guests walking in the open under old trees on a summer walk.
Guests walking a woodland path under spring trees.
Sunflower fields and rolling farmland in the Gascony countryside.

No two weeksare quite the same.

The shape stays: the market, the wine tasting, the Armagnac tasting, the Abbaye de Flaran, the Camino walk, the spa, a lunch and a dinner out and plenty of time with nothing on.

The rest belongs to the season and to the women who come. If you have been before, you will know the rhythm and still find the week is its own.
